Building Stronger Community Connections in Southwood
Southwood is full of stories, memories, and perspectives that shape how we experience our neighbourhood. This project invites you to share your stories, memories, and experiences of Southwood through photos and words.
Photovoice is a creative way of using photography and storytelling to reflect on our experiences, start dialogue, and inspire action. Participants take photos in response to guiding questions, then write or share short reflections about what the photos mean to them.
The goal of this project is to learn from Southwood residents by exploring three key questions:
What has shaped you, in small or big ways, in your neighbourhood?
What do you love about our neighbourhood?
What do you want to care for or change in Southwood?
How to take part:
Take 1-2 photos for each of the above guiding questions.
Write a short reflection for each photo.
Send your photos + reflections to sarah.thomas@calgary.ca
We will be collecting photos and reflections until December 15, 2025 , so there is lots of time to take part. Over the next few months, we’ll also be hosting a series of workshops — including intro to photography and writing support. After that, photos and stories will be printed and prepared for a community art exhibit, where they’ll be showcased to celebrate our neighbourhood, reflect on challenges, and think about the future of Southwood.
No photography or writing experience is needed — just use your phone or photos you already have. If you don’t have a camera or need support, we can lend equipment or connect you with a volunteer to help.
